PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS
"I came in as Undecided/Undeclared because I wanted to explore my options."
"Although I was interested in a specific major, I decided to come in as Undecided/Undeclared just to keep my options open and to see if anything else out there interested me."
Students who enter UCI as freshmen or sophomores may be uncertain about what major to choose and may not feel ready to declare. Such students may choose to participate in the Undecided/Undeclared Advising Program.
In order to make an informed decision and foster clear educational and career goals, students not only have to know about the degrees UCI has to offer, but also be aware of their own abilities and interests. Students in the Undecided/Undeclared Advising Program participate in a variety of programs that are designed to provide students with the information and experience they need to make the most of their academic career at UCI.
The Undecided/Undeclared Advising Program includes three key components to promote a successful transition and development during the first or second year at UCI:
UNIVERSITY STUDIES 2: UCI MAJORS
"I really didn't know what I wanted to study, but taking University Studies 2 helped me decide on a major."
"I entered as Undecided/Undeclared and found a good major thanks to University Studies."
University Studies 2 is a two-unit course offered in the fall quarter with limited availability during winter quarter for change of majors. It offers a systematic, informative, and guided tour of the entire range of academic majors and minors available at UCI. Topics covered include:
- Undergraduate majors and minors
- School and major admissions requirements
- The match between majors and eventual careers
- Career decision making and life planning
- Research, internship, and extracurricular opportunities
The course is required of all Undecided/Undeclared students with spaces for other students as available.
ACADEMIC ADVISING
"I wanted a major that UCI does not have so I came in Undecided/Undeclared. They helped me find the right major for me."
"As an Undecided/Undeclared student, I took several introductory classes and then picked the subject I enjoyed most as my major."
The Undecided/Undeclared advising staff is available throughout the academic year to discuss academic issues, such as course scheduling, breadth and major requirements, and academic progress. Students meet with an academic advisor each quarter to discuss progress toward a major, major declaration, and graduating in a timely manner. Beyond the quarterly appointments, the academic counselors and peer academic advisors are also available for drop-ins and scheduled appointments.
ACADEMIC UNIT ASSIGNMENT
"Changing my major was very easy thanks to the DUE office."
"The process of declaring a major was easy and the U/U program helped me immensely."
All freshman year Undecided/Undeclared students making normal progress will transition out of the Undecided/Undeclared Advising Program by attending a unit assignment session in the spring quarter of their first year. (Sophomore year students will not have the option of attending unit assignment.) In these sessions, you will learn more about the logistics and departmental policies of the academic unit you select.
Once you are assigned to an academic unit, you will no longer be Undecided/Undeclared. You will, instead, be under the jurisdiction of the new academic unit and its policies in academic advising, adding/dropping/changing the grade option for classes, academic probation/disqualification action, dean’s signatures, etc.
This is not a major declaration, but a step prior to major declaration. You will be referred to as "unaffiliated" within the academic unit (e.g., Social Sciences/Unaffiliated) until you declare a major.
Other programs offered through the Undecided/Undeclared Advising Program are as follows:
UNIVERSITY STUDIES 3: FRESHMAN SEMINARS
Designed especially for first-year students, freshman seminars offer you an exciting opportunity to broaden your academic horizons. They are one-unit courses limited to 15 students that meet an average of once a week for an hour throughout the quarter. You can receive a letter grade or elect the pass/not pass option. Seminars are offered in a wide range of disciplines with topics varying for fall, winter, and spring quarters. Freshman seminars let you:
- Explore a stimulating topic with outstanding faculty in a small group setting
- Gain an introduction to the culture of the University
- Get to know a professor noted for original research and commitment to teaching
- Learn about new unfamiliar fields of study in a supportive and congenial atmosphere
More information on the freshman seminars can be found on http://www.freshmanseminar.uci.edu/.
FIRST-YEAR EXCELLENCE PROGRAM (FYEP)
"At first I was a declared major, and then changed to Undecided/Undeclared so I could participate in the First-Year Excellence Program."
The First-Year Excellence Program is a housing option at UCI that creates a living and learning environment for Undecided/Undeclared students. The program is designed to support first-year students making the transition to University life and to help them define their educational goals. FYEP is designed for students who:
- Do not plan to declare their major until the end of the first year
- Have a minimum high school GPA of 3.0
- Have demonstrated leadership abilities
Students must complete a housing application on time and submit a short statement explaining past leadership experience and a desire to further develop your leadership skills. Participating in this program is an excellent way to start an enriching academic career here at UCI.
UNITED UNDECIDED/UNDECLARED (U-CUBED)
The purpose of the organization is to provide outreach to Undecided/Undeclared students in terms of social support and personal development. It is our hope that students who participate in this organization will feel a connection to the Division of Undergraduate Education, its resources, and the surrounding UCI communities. The organization will also provide leadership skills and networking for students who can potentially be leaders for our University tomorrow.
