Transfer Services Counseling Program

Freshman Seminar Program

STUDENTS

Designed especially for new upper-division transfer students, transfer seminars offer you an exciting opportunity to broaden your academic horizons. They are one-unit courses limited to 15 students that meet once a week for an hour throughout the quarter. You can receive a letter grade or elect the pass/not pass option.

Transfer seminars let you...
• ...explore a stimulating topic with outstanding faculty in a small group setting.
• ...gain an introduction to the culture of the university.
• ...get to know a professor noted for original research and commitment to teaching.
• ...learn about ways to do research within your field of study in a supportive and congenial atmosphere.
• ...form habits of inquiry and expression that will serve you through your academic career and beyond.

Seminars are offered in a wide range of disciplines with topics varying for fall, winter, and spring quarters. Students are encouraged to choose a seminar in their chosen discipline or one that is closely related as the seminars may assume basic knowledge of the discipline. Transfer seminars are normally taken for a letter grade, though students may choose the pass/not pass option. A maximum of two transfer seminars may be taken for credit, so long as the subjects vary. Students may add or drop a transfer seminar up until the end of the second week of classes.

Transfer seminars are part of the exciting course offerings in the University Studies program offered by the Division of Undergraduate Education to enhance the experience of new UCI students.

University Studies 2: UCI Majors, 2 units, fall/winter quarters. Open to all freshmen, required of Undecided/Undeclared students. Open to transfers as space allows, primarily in the winter.

University Studies 4: Transfer Seminars, 1 unit, fall/winter/spring quarters. Open preferentially to all new upper-division transfers during their first year at UCI.

Please note that the School of Biological Sciences offers freshman seminars for all its freshmen during spring quarter.
