INTERNATIONAL VILLAGE SEMINAR - FALL 2007

This seminar will be held near the International Village in Arroyo Vista. It is open to Education Abroad Program (EAP) reciprocity students, other residents of International Village, and to other students particularly interested in international study.

The purpose of this class is to help students understand scientific issues both contemporary and historical from an international perspective. The course is open to anyone with an interest in science, history, or international affairs. There are no prerequisites, and no particular technical knowledge is required.

Topics will include:

  • The royal society and the rise of the international scientific community
  • Natural products chemistry and developing countries, from the spice trade to modern gene mining
  • Genetically modified food in different cultures from selective breeding to recombinant DNA
  • Conflicts between conservation and economic development
  • The international consortium in Antarctica Global perspectives on infectious disease and public health
  • The space race, starting with the cold war and including the ISS and the X prize
  • Pollution and global warming
  • The arms race and nuclear proliferation
  • The growing worldwide demand for energy - challenges and possible solutions
Dr. Rachel Martin is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry where she studies physical and biophysical chemistry including techniques for determining the structure and function of biologically relevant protein networks. She is currently the faculty member in residence at the International Village.
