PAST SPOTLIGHTS

Each quarter, DUE spotlights one or more of the students, staff or faculty that are highly involved in that quarter's featured program...

MARCELLA KHELIF
CENTER FOR INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION
ADMINISTRATIVE DIRECTOR

Marcella

Marcella Khelif is passionate about study abroad. Her goal is that 50% of all UCI students will have at least one experience studying in another country by the time they graduate. To this end, in fall 2006 Marcella chaired UCI's first International Education Week (IEW) celebration.  IEW 2007 was in November.

This year Marcella transformed her passion for global learning into a new certificate program at UCI – the Global Leadership Program.  By partnering with other campus offices such as Student Affairs, International Center, Travel Study, Cross-Cultural Center, etc., Marcella leads the charge to create a program to encourage UCI students to increase their global competency and leadership skills.  By participating in a variety of activities sponsored by these offices, students will earn a certificate of completion and gain critical skills needed to succeed in an increasingly global society.

sue cross
WRITING AND LIBRARY RESEARCH PEER TUTOR COORDINATOR

Sue Cross is excited to be working as Tutor Coordinator in the newly created program of Writing and Library Research Peer Tutoring.  Along with Education and Outreach Librarian Anne Bock, Sue trains and supervises the tutors.  Sue says, “It’s delightful to work with these bright, energetic, creative people -- a diverse group in terms of experience, personality and major field of study.  Actively engaged in their own writing, peer tutors publish in venues such as the New University and the UCI Undergraduate Research Journal.  Occasionally they even visit each others’ tutoring sessions for advice on their own writing-in-progress.”

JEFF FULKERSON AND EMILY YEE
HOMECOMING KING AND QUEEN

This year’s homecoming king and queen are both members of UC Irvine’s Campuswide Honors Program (CHP).  This is the second time in UC Irvine history that a CHP student has been crowned as Homecoming royalty, but the first time that both queen and king are Campuswide Honors students.

Emily & Jeff

Emily Yee, a fourth year Biological Sciences major, and Jeff Fulkerson, a fourth year Information and Computer Sciences major, were announced as queen and king at Homecoming on February 3 before an enthusiastic crowd of supporters, including Peter the Anteater and a highly vocal group of CHP students and alumni.  The two had decided to run for Homecoming Court on Jeff’s impetus, who wanted to do so before graduating from UC Irvine.  They decided to “run together, supporting each other.” Their selection was a surprise for the two, who were overwhelmed by the support they received from a wide variety of students, clubs, and organizations.

Emily Yee came to UC Irvine after she “fell in love with the campus” at an event for prospective honors students.  She has become highly involved in student life at UC Irvine. She is a Peer Academic Advisor for the CHP, Vice President of Alpha Epsilon Delta Pre-Health Honor Society, Director of UTeach, and Social Chair of the Regents’ Scholar Association. Emily is currently working on an honors thesis, conducting research on butterfly vision in Professor Adriana Briscoe’s lab.  She plans to attend medical school next year, with interests in ophthalmology and retinal surgery.

Jeff Fulkerson is an Information and Computer Sciences major with a Digital Arts minor.  He chose UC Irvine because of its outstanding school of Information and Computer Sciences, and because he liked the campus’ “welcoming environment.”  Jeff’s research for his honors thesis is part of the Lighthouse Project under Professor André van der Hoek, which is a tool that helps multiple software developers collaborate on large-scale projects.  Jeff is a Resident Assistant, gives campus tours as a Campus Representative, and recently worked with a group of students to produce the film “How the West was Cliché” in UC Irvine’s Mad Film Dash, where students write and make a five-minute film in 24 hours.
