The Transfer Student Center and Lounge is celebrating its grand opening on September 26, 2007. The Transfer Services Counseling Program began in 2000 and recently expanded to include the Community College Partnership and the Transfer Student Center and Lounge. Transfer students at UC Irvine are primarily commuting to our campus, and now they have a place to hang out, store, cook and eat their lunch, get a hot or cold drink, talk with a counselor and/or transfer student mentor, attend workshops, and learn about all the resources available to them at UC Irvine. We are so excited about offering these fabulous services to the transfer population at UC Irvine!!

UCI students at any level may bring writing-in-progress to a peer tutor for consultation at four locations!
The Campus Writing Coordinator's Office has worked with the Library to develop a new peer tutoring program to help students develop their writing skills. This month's spotlight features Sue Cross, the program's Tutor Coordinator.
To design the program in accordance with research in the field of rhetoric and composition, and to tailor it to UCI students’ needs, Sue worked with Cathy Palmer (Head of the Libraries’ Education and Outreach Department) and Lydia Soleil (Housing’s First-Year-Initiative Coordinator). With the support of the Campus Writing Coordinator, Libraries, and Housing, the program was successfully piloted in Spring Quarter 2006, and it is now fully implemented for the Academic Year 2006-07. Tutoring sessions take place Monday though Thursday evenings in Langson Library, Mesa Court, Middle Earth and Science Library. In Fall Quarter 2006, the program served hundreds of students. Many of them returned for multiple sessions, and over 94% of them rated the tutors as either good or excellent.

This fall DUE is piloting its new First-Year Integrated Program (FIP) with two course sequences. Each FIP sequence is a year-long experience for freshmen that introduces them to the ways different disciplines approach similar topics. Through integrated coursework, participants in the program are also brought into a unique learning experience that revolves around building community among a core group of multi-disciplinary faculty, graduate teaching assistants, and students early on in their academic careers.
The two sequences for 2006-7 are University Studies 11: "Persuasion and Social Change" and University Studies 12: "Computer Games as Art, Culture and Technology". Over 100 freshmen are enrolled in US 11 and US 12. Our hope is that in 2007-8, we will have five FIP sequences and be able to accommodate nearly 10% of the freshman class in this exciting first-year experience. In addition to expanding FIP course offerings and topics, our plans for the future are to add residential and peer mentor components to the program.
